FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The questions Jaguar owners actually ask us — answered plainly.

  • What is the difference between a Jaguar scheduled oil service and a vehicle inspection?

Jaguar servicing splits work into an oil service and a longer vehicle inspection rather than a lettered Service A / Service B. The oil service is typically annual (or around 10,000–16,000 miles) and covers oil, oil filter, cabin filter where due, fluid check and an SDD / Pathfinder service-indicator reset. The inspection is the longer check — often around two years depending on how the car is driven — and adds brake fluid, air filter, spark plugs on petrol cars and a longer inspection list.

  • How much does a Jaguar service cost in London?

At our London workshop, a scheduled oil service starts from £249 and a vehicle inspection from £349, depending on model and engine. We send a fixed-price quote before any work begins.

  • Will an independent service affect my Jaguar warranty?

No. Under EU Block Exemption Regulation, independent servicing does not void your manufacturer or approved-used warranty as long as it is done to the Jaguar schedule with the correct JLR-approved oils and parts — which is exactly how we work.

  • What happens if I skip a Jaguar service?

Skipping services — particularly gearbox fluid, brake fluid and JLR-approved oil changes — is the single most common cause of expensive repairs on modern Jaguars. We recommend sticking to the time/mileage schedule.

  • How much do Jaguar diagnostics cost?

Our standard diagnostic charge is £85 inc. VAT, which includes a full SDD / Pathfinder scan across every control unit, live data analysis and a written report. We credit the charge against any repair we carry out.

  • Is a generic OBD2 scan the same as SDD / Pathfinder diagnostics?

No. An OBD2 scanner only reads emissions-related faults. A modern Jaguar has dozens of control units. JLR SDD / Pathfinder reads all of them, runs live data, actuates components on demand and does coding and programming — the same as a main dealer.

  • Is a Jaguar warning light always serious?

Not always, but they should never be ignored. Yellow warnings typically mean "investigate soon" and red warnings mean "stop the car safely". We will read the fault codes on SDD / Pathfinder and tell you plainly how urgent it is.

  • Do I get the diagnostic fee back if I go ahead with the repair?

Yes. If we carry out the repair we have quoted, the £85 diagnostic fee is credited against the invoice.

  • How much is an MOT for a Jaguar?

The MOT fee is a DVSA-fixed £54.85. We discount the test when combined with a scheduled service.

  • What happens if my Jaguar fails MOT?

We will explain exactly what failed, send a fixed-price quote to put it right, and — if the repair is done with us — retest the car free within 10 working days.

  • What does an MOT advisory actually mean?

An advisory is an item that is worn or borderline but not yet a failure. It does not have to be repaired immediately, but it will usually become a failure within 6-12 months and we will tell you which ones are worth doing now.

  • Can a blocked DPF be cleaned instead of replaced?

In most cases yes. We check soot and ash loading on SDD / Pathfinder first. If ash loading is below the limit, a forced regen or an off-car clean usually restores function. Only when ash loading is beyond the service limit do we replace the DPF.

  • My Jaguar says "AdBlue: starts not possible in 900 miles". Can you fix it?

Yes. The countdown is triggered by a specific fault in the AdBlue / SCR system — usually a NOx sensor, AdBlue injector or tank heater. Once the root cause is fixed and verified, we clear the countdown on SDD / Pathfinder.

  • What are the symptoms of a failed Jaguar EGR?

Rough idle, reduced power, coolant loss (if the EGR cooler is leaking on Ingenium diesels), white smoke, and fault codes relating to EGR valve position or cooler leaks.

  • What are the most common Jaguar air suspension faults?

By far the most common are leaking air springs (particularly on XJ X351 and F-Pace where air is fitted), followed by compressor wear, valve block leaks and ride-height sensor failures.

  • Should I convert my Jaguar air suspension to coilovers?

Only as a last resort. A coilover conversion is cheap short-term but changes the ride character, can trigger permanent fault codes and usually hurts resale value. We recommend repairing the air springs properly in almost every case.

  • Do you warranty Jaguar air suspension work?

Yes. Every air spring and compressor we fit carries a 12-month parts and labour warranty.

  • Does my Jaguar gearbox really need an oil service?

Yes. Despite filled-for-life marketing, every ZF 8HP and older 6HP box we see benefits from a fluid and filter service on a sensible interval (typically around 40,000–60,000 miles). It is the single best thing you can do for long-term gearbox health.

  • What are the symptoms of a ZF 8HP mechatronic or adapter-sleeve leak?

Delayed engagement from P or R, harsh or flaring shifts, transmission fluid around the bellhousing connector, limp mode, or the car refusing to select gear when hot. These are classic ZF 8HP mechatronic / adapter-sleeve faults.

  • My Jaguar automatic is slipping — can it be saved?

Sometimes. If it is fluid-related or an 8HP mechatronic / adapter-sleeve issue, absolutely. If the clutch packs are mechanically worn, it usually needs a rebuild. A proper gearbox diagnostic on SDD / Pathfinder will tell us which.

  • Is a major Jaguar engine repair worth doing?

On well-kept cars, yes — most Jaguar engines are easily good for 200,000 miles after one major repair. We will give you a fixed-price quote and an honest view of the car's remaining life before you decide.

  • What does a stretched Jaguar AJ-V8 or Ingenium timing chain sound like?

A metallic rattle on cold start, usually lasting 1-3 seconds and going quiet when warm. Often accompanied by a camshaft / crankshaft correlation fault code. Common on AJ-V8 XK/XF/XJ and some early Ingenium diesels.

  • What are the common faults on Jaguar Ingenium diesels?

Timing chain stretch and guide failure on early cars, EGR cooler leaks, swirl-flap issues, DPF loading on short runs, and AdBlue/SCR faults. We diagnose on SDD / Pathfinder before quoting.

  • What is SDD / Pathfinder coding and why does my Jaguar need it?

SDD / Pathfinder coding writes the correct parameters for your exact VIN into a replacement control module. Without it, a new module will throw faults and often refuse to work. We do it in the workshop via SDD / Pathfinder — JLR's equivalent of dealer programming.

  • How much does a new Jaguar key cost?

Costs vary by model and whether the car uses older or later security modules, but typically £200-£450 for the key plus the SDD / Pathfinder programming charge. We can quote for your exact VIN.

  • Which Jaguar retrofits can you activate?

Reversing cameras on compatible head units, Apple CarPlay / Android Auto activation on later InControl units, and many feature activations. Ask us for your specific VIN.

  • My Jaguar says "Brake pads worn". Do I have time to drive?

Yes — the sensor warns before pads are dangerous. But book in within the next week. Running past that point risks scoring the discs, which turns a £189 job into a £500+ job.

  • How often should Jaguar brake fluid be changed?

Every 2 years, as part of the scheduled inspection. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time and old fluid boils under hard braking, which is exactly when you need it to work.

  • Does my Jaguar need an SBC brake service?

No. Jaguar has no SBC. Jaguar uses DSC (Dynamic Stability Control). Brake fluid should still be changed about every two years, and any DSC work needs a proper bleed on SDD / Pathfinder so the warning light clears.

  • How often does Jaguar air conditioning need a regas?

Modern AC systems lose around 5% refrigerant a year through normal permeation. Every 3-4 years is typical. If your AC has stopped cooling suddenly, that is a leak, not gradual loss — we will find and fix it first.

  • What is the difference between R1234yf and R134a refrigerant?

R1234yf is the modern, lower-GWP refrigerant fitted to most Jaguars from the mid-2010s onwards. R134a is used on older cars. They are not interchangeable — we have both.

  • Why does my Jaguar AC smell musty?

Usually a blocked cabin filter and bacterial growth on the evaporator. A new pollen filter and an evaporator clean fixes it in an hour.

  • Why use an independent Jaguar specialist instead of a main dealer?

Three reasons: you deal with the same people every time, our hourly rate is lower, and you keep warranty and digital service-history protection either way (under EU Block Exemption).

  • Do you offer collection and delivery across London?

Yes. We offer collection and return across Greater London. Ask when you book and we will confirm coverage for your postcode.
